Bobcatsss 2024 in Portugal: A Day of Insights, Culture, and Surprises

Welcome to the first day of the 32nd Bobcatsss Conference in Portugal, an event that advances European cooperation in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). Today promises not only fascinating insights into sustainable development at universities but also cultural highlights and surprising discoveries.

After registration, the conference opened ceremoniously, and participants eagerly listened to the first keynote by Patrícia Pereira da Silva, Pro-Rector for Planning and Sustainability, Faculty of Economics. Her presentation, „Harmonizing growth and sustainability: higher education institutions’ journey through sustainable development challenge“, provided interesting insights into the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the University of Coimbra.

A successful start that yielded valuable insights for upcoming presentations. But the day had more in store. After the keynote, participants were treated to a generous coffee and cake buffet featuring Portuguese delicacies, providing the perfect opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow conference attendees. Bright sunshine was waiting for us outside and we enjoyed the great weather.

The next keynote by Gobinda Chowdhury, „Information for sustainable development: towards a research roadmap,“ delved into the world of libraries. In his presentation, Chowdhury illustrated how libraries worldwide play a crucial role in achieving the SDGs. From promoting universal literacy and access to information technologies to preserving cultural heritage, libraries are key players in the digital age. Chowdhury discussed not only the current state of developments but also the challenges in measuring the contributions of the LIS sector to the SDGs.

After a rejuvenating lunch in the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry cafeteria, a cultural highlight awaited: a guided tour of the historical buildings of the University of Coimbra, including the Joanina Library. The UNESCO World Heritage Site surprised with fascinating facts, including a university-owned prison for students and professors, where seemingly harmless offenses like overdue books could put someone in jail.

The day continued with a series of inspiring presentations on „21st Century Skills and Information Profession.“ Participants learned about the challenges faced by records managers in the 21st century, particularly in sustainable development and personal data protection. Other topics included librarians‘ role as advocates for access to knowledge, the presence of book influencers in libraries, and, finally, the integration of information tools into the librarian profession.

Tired but filled with new insights, an exciting first day at the Bobcatsss 2024 Conference in Portugal came to an end.
